Hello, My name is João, but as an English teacher, I go by Jo. I was born in Vancouver, Canada on December 23rd, 1984. I studied Philosophy at the University of Lisbon, I spent many years of my life in Portugal since that’s the native country of my parents. After I graduated, I worked for many years as a freelance musician, during this period I always taught music to learners of every age, both one-on-one classes and big classes. After a while, I realized my life as a musician wasn’t fulfilling, and I decided to backpack around the world. During this period I decided that working as an ESL teacher was what I wanted to do for the years to come. After that decision I moved to China and I worked for almost 2 years as a teacher, it was an amazing experience in many regards: my connections with my students, with my colleagues, with the parents of my students, with the culture of the country, with the travels I was allowed to do, I knew that finally, I had found what I wanted. After 2 years in Asia (during the pandemic in China I lost my job and I lived for almost 3 months between Laos and Vietnam) I decided to come back home (now home is Portugal even though I’m Canadian) mainly because of personal and sentimental reasons. Now I want to keep on doing this job that allows my soul to get richer while I’m in contact with the people of the world, so I’m looking forward to starting a new adventure, hopefully as a co-worker of someone reading this letter.
