Letter of Introduction My name is John Bedell. and I am a recent graduate of the University of California Los Angeles. I obtained my B.A. in English Literature; however, I also have experience in editorial work and ESL instruction. I have worked in the field of education for about three years. The area of education I worked in was primarily in tutoring. I have two years of experience instructing college students in compositions and literary criticism. For about a year, I have worked with second and third graders in reading and writing. I think my favorite part of working with younger students is the flexibility of instruction. For example, I enjoy using creative short fiction to connect aspects of literature. I also have some prior experience working as a freelance tutor. When I lived in the city of Riverside CA, I connected with a number of Chinese churches, where I was asked to instruct a number of short lectures on the English language. Many of the families I worked with became close friends of mine, because of this, I gained proficiency in Mandarin Chinese. Although my skill in Chinese has faltered in recent years, I can still hold a conversation. In fact, these experiences have pushed me to pursue my TESOL certification at UCLA’s extension program. In addition to my prior work experience, I also have several interests that inspire my teaching methods. One of these interests is history, art, and fictional writing, in fact, I am currently working on a book. This project has been a huge inspiration in terms of establishing study plans for my students. For instance, I have more effective methods with respect to symbolism identification and plot points, as I have had to evaluate my own work for logical gaps.
