Hereby, I express my interest and motives to apply to the position as an English teacher. I am confident I have the experience necessary to handle the unique challenges presented to the position as I’ve been involved in teaching English to speakers of other languages for the past 13 years. Since I began teaching English in 2007, I’ve acquired a great amount of experience and several characteristics pertaining to the field of teaching English as a second language. First of all, patience is one of my strengths when it comes to teaching English. Another of my strengths as an ESL teacher is that I have experience teaching one-on-one sessions, small groups, and large-size classes. I began having one-on-one tutoring for ESL students at the community college I attended. Then I taught English and math to small groups of migrant students (English learners) K-12 when I worked for the California Mini-Corps program. Later, in 2014, I began teaching academic English (grammar, listening and speaking, writing, reading and vocabulary, and TOEFL preparation) at the American English Institute in the California State University of Fresno to small classes of foreign college students whose goal was to take the TOEFL in order to attend a university in the United States. From 2017 to 2018, I taught speaking, writing, grammar in Reedley College to large classes of adults from the community who were mainly learning English for job purposes. Recently, for the past 2 and a half years, I have been teaching in-person and on-line oral English and IELTS speaking and writing lessons to large classes of primary, middle school, and college students in Mainland China. In the meantime, I have also been teaching English part-time in language institutes to small groups (4 to 5 students) of preschool and primary students. Furthermore, most of my graduate work and research in Linguistics and TESL focused on first language interference in learning English as a second language. Thus, I always have in mind how certain aspects of English may be difficult for students depending on their native language and try to find solutions to teach this in a more efficient way based on research. Finally, I worked with children with autism providing them ABA (applied behavior analysis) therapy. Part of this type of therapy includes providing language therapy for those children suffering from delays in their language (English) development. Also, Knowledge in this field has equipped me with techniques and strategies to deal with disruptive behaviors that may occur in the classroom (especially when teaching children) and provide positive reinforcement in order to reward and encourage good behaviors and learning achievement. I am sure that the passion, experience and qualities I have acquired and developed so far in the field of teaching English to English learners makes me the right candidate for the teaching position that you are offering, always keeping an open mind to learn as much as possible from new experiences.
